I’m actually really enjoying this season.
Not even a joke.
Non Non Biyori Repeat
I love this show. Even though the first season is one of my favorite anime, this season might actually be better. Not only do we just get to see more of the characters and their daily lives in the sticks, but the show seems to be doing a better job of including more emotional moments. While the first season was just a relaxing and humorous slice-of-life, this one puts more attention on the sentimentality while still retaining the charm and humor. It’s excellent.
THERE HAS BEEN ACTUAL DEVELOPMENT ON ALL FRONTS.
Basically, the first season set up a few plot threads that were never really acted on, the second season toyed with them without providing development, and the third season is now moving forward with the threads. There have not been concrete results yet, but there’s still half a season to go. So I’m hoping for resolution for all of the characters’ relationships.
This show becomes more incoherent with each new episode. I’m only on the third, and what I’m planning to do is wait till the end, then marathon the rest.
I wasn’t enjoying the show, and it wasn’t showing any signs of improvement. It’s still generic, it’s still boring.
Gakkou Gurashi / School-Live!
As a slice-of-life, this works in a very roundabout manner. If this was just a show about four girls and their school club, omitting all of the other stuff, it would be extremely boring. However, add in the unsettling juxtaposition of their attempts at living normally in a world that has gone to shit, and it becomes oddly captivating.
They’ve already devoted a bit of time to backstory, so I’m hoping that there will be some advancement to the present in the next few episodes.
And Yuki has some serious mental issues. I would say they should check her into a hospital, but… you know…
Arslan Senki / The Heroic Legend of Arslan
Let me sum up 99% of the conflicts in this show:
Group 1: “We have the upper hand! We surely cannot lose!”
Group 2: “You thought you would win, but we have this counter-strategy that is designed to perfectly usurp every single thing you had planned!”
Group 1: “Oh no, we have no chance and will lose!”
For all they harp on about strategy, whoever wrote this doesn’t seem to have too much of an understanding of how humans actually think. People are undoubtedly selfish, but soldiers neglecting duties just to pick up gold that was quite obviously thrown for the exact purpose of distracting them? Right in front of their superior officer? And every single one of them fall for it? That was just the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak, combined with many other incremental issues. The attempts at humor are a joke, the characters are about as bland and predictable as you can get, the animation is inconsistent, and the story is uninteresting.
Himouto! Umaru-chan / My Two-Faced Little Sister
When I saw a gif of Umaru shitposting, I knew I had to check out the show. I’m glad that I did.
As far as bizarre shows go, this is just about the perfect degree for me. The ridiculousness of Umaru’s at-home state never overwhelms, but consistently delivers goofy humor. Adding in her attempts to clearly define her social life and home life, and how other people perceive her in both situations, is the kind of thing that would only work in an anime or manga. And it works perfectly. I’m definitely looking forward to each new episode.
Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai / SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist
I just started this and watched everything that’s out so far, so I figured I’d add it to the list now.
This show is weird. Very weird. It’s like Seitokai Yakuindomo with more impact, more idiots, and more rape. It is pretty funny, but the stuff with Anna’s “love nectar” and delusional obsession is more bothersome than entertaining. I’m pretty split at this point, so we’ll see how it goes.
I’m up-to-date with Shokugeki no Souma, I’m just waiting for the end of the season to add more to my thoughts on it (I still love it though). And Ore Monogatari / My LOVE Story is still sort of on hold. I’ll get back to it eventually, hopefully before the end of the season. I haven’t started the second season of The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls, nor do I know when I will, so don’t expect anything on it anytime soon.
