I’m only picking up
four five shows this season, so things will be pretty straightforward.
There are only a few shows I’m interested in this season, so I’m going to spend this summer catching up on other stuff that I’ve been lagging behind on for up to several years. Like Monster and Great Teacher Onizuka. And then stuff like Stardust Crusaders and Kuroko no Basket since I didn’t get to them in the spring.
Non Non Biyori Repeat
Non Non Biyori was one of my favorite shows of 2013, and I was so happy when they announced a sequel. It’s an extremely light slice-of-life with cute characters set in a relaxing environment, the perfect thing to watch when you just need to unwind.
I was very confused when I started watching this – I expected a direct sequel, but the first episode of Repeat actually takes place before the first season. However, since the next episode will have Hotaru, I’d imagine the show will be filling in some of the gaps left by the first season, remaining in chronological order but focusing on different situations.
I actually just marathoned the first two seasons within the past two weeks. While the first season felt like it rehashed the same general jokes for the entirety of the show, the second was far more enjoyable, with more diversity in the delivery and by offering more than the same three jokes.
Based on the first two episodes, it really seems like things could go either way this time around. It felt like a fairly direct extension of the story, but with the typical “It’s the first episode, so let’s re-introduce everyone within the first few minutes.” But what I want is actual development!
Will Otoo-san ever find his wife?
Will Yamada ever be found by her brother?
Will Satou ever confess his feelings?
Will Inami ever confess her feelings?
Will Todoroki ever explain why she carries a katana?
Will Souma continue to blackmail everyone?
Will Popura’s ponytail always be perfect?
Will Takanashi ever be arrested for pedophilia?
Izaya may or may not be psycho bonkers crazy. That is all.
At first, this was actually the only show I was planning on watching this season that isn’t a carry-over or sequel. The story is really generic based on the first episode, so I’m hoping things improve in that regard. A lot.
Obviously, one of the most noteworthy aspects of the show is the visuals. It’s like half cel-shading that you’d see in many games, half… odd. Especially with all the monster things being CG that still doesn’t really match the style of the regular animation. Maybe it will grow on me, but the animation is noticeably jilted at many points, and I definitely prefer Ufotable’s style in the Fate series and Kara no Kyoukai over this.
Gakkou Gurashi! / School-Live!
What. The. F#@$.
I had absolutely no idea what I was getting in to with this show. Just watch the first episode, I don’t really want to spoil the impact. I wasn’t originally planning on watching this, but now…
Left over from last season are Shokugeki no Souma / Food Wars, Arslan Senki / The Heroic Legend of Arslan, and Ore Monogatari / My Love Story. I’ll also be watching the second season of The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls, but probably not as it airs. We’ll see.
