Thoughts So Far – Winter 2015 Anime

Welcome back to the monthly installment of “Why pretty young anime girls are the reason I watch anime,” starring pretty young anime girls, pretty young anime boys?, and potential double suicide!

For the most part, I think everything’s been about what I expected after the first episode – there haven’t been any huge surprises.

Koufuku Graffiti / Gourmet Girl Graffiti

This show makes me feel things. A dollop of headtilts, a dash of gorgeous food, a taste of relaxation, a pinch of Shaft flair, and a full course of oddly erotic food consumption all come together to be one of the oddest shows of the season – but certainly not in a bad way. More shows should be about food.

One of the most interesting parts of the show is that the characters commonly look in the direction of the camera while explaining the cooking, which makes it feel like a cooking show. If nothing else, I leave every episode extremely hungry, so I suppose this could very easily work as an advertisement for… food.

Kantai Collection

As expected, I haven’t kept up with this one, so I don’t have too much to add yet. There’s been more serious stuff than I expected, but it’s still about what I expected altogether. It’s nothing special, but it’s far from being unbearable.

Durarara!!x2 Shou

It’s been a pretty long time since I watched the first season of Durarara, and that’s certainly not helping my understanding of a story that revolves around a large cast. And I don’t remember everybody being this lanky. Above all else, my main concern with the show is how it handles a non-chronological story. It puts everything out of order, explains why things happened that way, moves forward a bit, and then pauses to explain something else entirely, and then capping everything off with a quick recap before actually moving on. Keeping track of the actual order of events is made far more difficult than it should be, and the non-chronological presentation doesn’t even feel like it serves any purpose other than making things needlessly complicated.

At the very least, the story looks like it could be heading in an interesting direction, so I’m looking forward to how the seemingly unrelated threads of the story come together. If it’s anything like the first season, it will lose steam halfway through.

Death Parade

As made evident by the OP, this show provokes a very mixed range of emotions, but it does it very effectively. One episode has you sad at the characters’ plight, and the next you’re laughing at the bizarre situations everyone’s found themselves in. While the Death Billiards short set up an interesting premise, Death Parade seems to be taking advantage of it very well, even if I’m not sure how well they’ll deliver with some of the plot points they’re setting up. This could be really good, but I’m not going to get my hopes too high.

The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls

Quality subtitles

So far, this is pretty average. It lacks the appeal that the original series had, mostly because all of the character feel pretty cliche, and there’s already some pretty cringeworthy drama. The producer is much more interesting this time around, as he is clearly a charismatic man who has a way with words. /sarcasm

But seriously, Mio just seems like an entitled brat. Waah, waah, I’m a big baby.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu / Assassination Classroom

The first episode set up this ridiculous show pretty well, and it’s been pretty consistent at both keeping things dynamic (particularly with new characters introduced) and continuously blurring the line between Koro-sensei the totally-not-an-alien planning to destroy the planet and Koro-sensei the teacher who loves to help his students. Since the manga’s still ongoing, I’m expecting this to have a meh non-ending, but as long as it doesn’t fall flat before then I’ll be more than happy with the show as a whole.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei Bu Love! / Handsome High School Earth Defense Club Love!

As I expected/worried, this show just ended up being weekly awkwardness. Each episode is the same general ordeal, and I’ve found myself spending the duration of each one doing other things rather than paying close rapt attention. I’m not going to drop it yet, but it’ll probably happen before too long. Don’t be surprised if I haven’t watched any more of it once the end of the season rolls around.

Yuri Kuma Arashi / Lesbian Bear Storm

I got about three minutes into the second episode, so I don’t have anything to add since last time.

The Rolling Girls

This show is really weird. I haven’t really wrapped my head around what I think about it so far, but at least it’s not entirely bad, just really weird and certainly unpredictable. One second completely normal things are happening, the next everything’s absolutely whack. But right after that, everything might return to normal. It’s not difficult to follow in the “no comprendo OMG it’s 3deep5me” way, but just a “Do you even logic?” one. It’s nice and colorful, so that’s at least one way it’s superior to its most relatable relative, kek la kek. And it doesn’t have awful CG randomly thrown in during action scenes.

And now, for stuff that carried over from last season.

[Cthuko] Shirobako - 16 [720p H264 AAC][81E1FDD4].mkv_snapshot_17.23_[2015.02.04_01.48.38]

I considered this one of my favorite shows from last season (and even last year), but I honestly think it’s gotten even better in several ways. And I’m pretty sure Aoi is perfection incarnate. I’ll definitely be writing a review once this is over.

Kiseijuu / Parasyte

This will be on hold until it finishes, then I’m going to marathon the second half. So, nothing to add yet.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso / Your Lie in April

The people behind this show do not understand the concept of subtlety. It’s been obvious for about half the show that something was physically wrong with Kaori, and big surprise it turns out there is! Of course, this is no surprise to the viewers, just the idiotic characters. And while Kousei spent the majority of the first thirteen episodes whining about how his mother’s influence made him unable to play the piano anymore (for some reason), the situation is magically resolved by him blocking out the memories of her abusing him, instead focusing on the happy stuff from when he was an even more ignorant brat. Because if we’ve been abused, we should just ignore that, right?

At some point, I completely stopped enjoying this show, instead just being annoyed by the monotonous drama and general BS of the story. It’s not funny even though it pretends to be, it makes dramatic situations even worse by trying to inject this unfunny humor in some sad attempt to lighten the mood, the characters spend the whole show whining and crying about completely artificial problems that they’re imagining (besides one with a legitimate issue, who ironically doesn’t complain about it), and even the music has taken a complete backseat to all the other garbage I couldn’t care less about.

There are a few shows that I may tack on to my list for the season once I approach the end – that will depend on what I’m hearing about other shows as they near their conclusions.

  1. Parasyte: Still enjoyable. Though I think the second half might be weaker than the first.
Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei Bu Love!: Watched up to Episode 5 and every time I start the episode I lose interest. Seems I can’t go any further with it. I tried.

    1. I think the ending is what will make or break Parasyte at this point (ep 21 or so). There are a few things that I wish had been explored a bit more, but otherwise I’m still enjoying it very much.

On Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei Bu Love!… well… I’m not up-to-date, but my interest has been waning since the second episode.

What do you think?
